The Celestial Professor’s Very Own Personalized HSP Test

Labeling can be revealing, but owning the label can be discouraging, if not downright dangerous.

The Celestial Professor’s Personalized HSP Test: Labeling can be revealing, but owning the label can be discouraging, if not downright dangerous.

When filling out any kind of questionnaire to find out whether a label applies to you, it’s important to remember that the label is only a way to further your understanding of yourself and your inclinations. It is never a way to limit you, your personality, or your identity.

Learning I was an HSP was my first step in recognizing that I was not alone in the way I felt or perceived the world. That there were actually other people going around feeling things as deeply as I felt them and sure that expressing those deep feelings was not okay. I will forever be grateful for that insight and recognition.

That’s why the following list of traits can be helpful. Not to commit you taking on the HSP label, but to establish for yourself the ways in which you’d like to shift your perspective. Would you rather live your life as a victim of your sensitivities or see them in a new way? Would you rather feel sure than unsure? Comfortable than uncomfortable? Calm than anxious?

I would.

Here’s my very own personal list of the ways I feel sensitive, like an HSP.

There are lots of them, I know. And each of them exists of a scale of severity depending on my experience. Whether all or none of the items on my list apply to you precisely is not the issue here! You may be really sensitive to the scent of flowers, but not sensitive to the smell of dryer sheets. There’s a spectrum for everything. When you’re considering each item on this list, therefore, remember that it’s not only about severity, but about trends, and about the way your particular sensitivities manifest.

  • You feel unsure, uncomfortable, and/or anxious in social situations
  • You are easily overstimulated, overwhelmed
  • You would often describe how you feel as “depressed”
  • You find it hard to understand signals from other people—even if you feel what they’re feeling intensely
  • You find it hard to make friends or preferring to be on your own
  • You find it hard to express how you feel—even when/if you’re feeling what you feel intensely
  • You feel out of place in the world in general
  • Do you wish there were some kind of magic pill that could make you “normal”?
  • Do have fears that don’t make any sense?
  • Do you notice things about people that no one else notices?
  • Do you get the sense that someone is not being truthful, but the person denies it—and no one else agrees with you?
  • Do you cry a lot? Do you have the feeling that if you let yourself let go and cry whenever you felt like it, you’d never be able to stop?
  • Did anyone ever tell you your feelings were inappropriate or silly or just plain wrong?
  • Were you told that being logical was what mattered, not how you felt about something?
  • When you’re pushed to get something done quickly do you get freaked out easily and tend to shut down?
  • When you feel as if you’re being tested and have to come up with answers quickly do you get flustered easily and tend to forget the things you know?
  • Do you tend to second-guess yourself? Do you feel that whatever decision you make will be wrong?
  • Are you are deeply concerned about being found out? About being wrong? About failing? About making what other people might say are mistakes?
  • Do you need multiple shots of Novocain at the dentist when other people only need one?

I could go on and on, but by now you probably get the point: that we are all variations on the same theme when we are highly sensitive.

I encourage you to fill in the space below with your own list. Why? Simply because you need to know that:

  1. It’s okay to be the way you are.
  2. That there are lots of us in the same boat.
  3. That being this way is not an excuse to avoid life, but the beginning of an entirely new journey of discovery and awakening.
