Today, our focus is something I call The Great Paradox<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n It might not sound like such a big deal, but just think about it.<\/p>\n You gotta love it. That the way to becoming a happier camper as a human being is to develop the side of you that\u2019s beyond human. Beyond things. Beyond therapy. Beyond thought. How trippy is that?<\/em><\/p>\n You really gotta appreciate that the only way to get to a spiritually inclined place inside yourself, you need to get into that zone of silence where you enter thoughtless awareness. It\u2019s like Maxwell Smart\u2019s “Cone of Silence.” I know I\u2019m dating myself, but Get Smart <\/em>\u2013the TV show?\u2014was a thing in those days and watching that stupid glass \u201ccone of silence\u201d come down to protect confidentiality seemed pretty funny.<\/p>\n Anyway, the point is that, if you\u2019ve gone beyond<\/em> thought, <\/strong>when you return to the \u201creal world\u201d you feel it\u2019s actually a little easier to be the human that you are.<\/p>\n At least, that\u2019s the way it feels to me.<\/p>\n I call it The Great Paradox<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n See, it\u2019s like this. Every time I meditate, before I get anywhere near or close to that place without thought, what I have to do to get there is to focus, not on what I\u2019m thinking<\/em>, but what my body is feeling. I take steps to focus my mind on the things I\u2019m feeling\u2014physically, in other words, somatically in my body\u2014to get there.<\/p>\n I FEEL.<\/p>\n \u2026And then my mind starts jabbering away, usually a running commentary about whatever it is I\u2019m noticing that my body is feeling. And then, judgmental commentary on the fact that I\u2019ve entered into commentary. Today is a perfect example.<\/p>\n There I am \u201ctrying\u201d to meditate<\/a>, and all I can think about is that I\u2019m trying to meditate and that I don\u2019t have that much time this morning to meditate before I need to start doing the things I need to do. It\u2019s crazy, right?<\/p>\n What do I do? In my mind, I tell myself to focus on my body. (Which, again, feels like a paradox, since I\u2019m trying to get away from all that supposed worldly stuff.) Anyway, that works for a second or two and then I start thinking about how tight my neck feels. Pretty soon, I\u2019m dying to shift my position and give my neck a good crack. I fight the feeling for a while. Pretty soon, it\u2019s all I can think about. So, eventually, and thinking about how much time I\u2019ve \u201cwasted,\u201d I give in and shift around and crack my neck.<\/p>\n AAAHHH. Now I feel better. Now <\/em>I can get back to meditating.<\/p>\n Right? <\/em>And so it goes.<\/p>\n I guess you\u2019d have to say that The Great Paradox of being human\u2014that is, spirit in a biodegradable human suit\u2014is really made up of many paradoxes.<\/p>\n All of which are opportunities, or as I like to say, \u201cwhopper-tunities,\u201d for my own evolution. And if there\u2019s one thing I know<\/em>, it\u2019s that the more I evolve, the more the planet evolves.<\/p>\n Which makes me happy!<\/p>\n So\u2026that does it for today\u2019s installment of down-to-earth spirituality.
